Were you hoping that if you screamed, the plan would change?

Context: You are setting a limit with a friend. They can wear their shoes, or they can carry them. Those are the options. As you explain this, your child starts to scream.

You can say out loud, in a wondering voice, “Were you hoping that if you screamed, the plan would change?” Follow up with repeating your limit, “You can wear your shoes, or carry them. If you need me to, I can help you choose.” Then follow through by passing the shoes to their hands or putting them on their feet.
